Divertimenti December 24, 2011

According to one version of the legend, Pygmalion was the priest king of Cyprus a Greek Island in the Mediterranean Sea. He was also a fine sculptor and while carving a life-like statue of a woman he fell in love with it. So strong was his affection for his carving he yearned and pined for it to be real. When the great goddess Aphrodite heard his prayers she, being kind, brought the statue to life. Pygmalion and his love spent many years together and had a girl child named Paphos.
This painting was completed in 2003. It was shown later that year at the Dibden Center for the Arts in Vermont. The work went through many phases and moods and took several months to complete. The result is a painting about poetry and the enchantment of love.
